Built-Ins
Custom Built-Ins in Chicago
A built-in should look like it belongs to the room — not like something added after the fact. We design around the architecture, the trim, the outlets, and the way the space is actually used.
What we build
- Floor-to-ceiling wall units and library shelving
- Home office built-ins with desk surfaces and storage
- Living room and family room entertainment walls
- Bedroom wall units and wardrobe surrounds
- Window seat benches with storage below
- Fireplace flanking cabinetry and shelving
- Architectural arches and niche millwork
What to send us to get started
- Wall dimensions and ceiling height
- Trim and baseboard profiles — we can match them
- Outlet and switch locations
- Design direction — inspiration images or architect drawings
- How you plan to use the space
Built-ins that need to match existing trim or fit unusual walls take more measuring before drawings can begin. We can come to the site to take measurements when the project moves forward.
Common questions
- What kinds of built-ins do you build?
- Living room wall units, library shelving, home office desks and storage, bedroom wardrobe surrounds, window benches, entertainment walls, fireplace flanking cabinetry, and architectural niche work. If it lives against a wall and needs to be built to the room, we probably build it.
- Can built-ins be designed around existing trim, outlets, and windows?
- Yes — this is almost always the starting point. We take wall dimensions, note outlet locations, measure baseboard and crown profiles, and design around what is there. Most built-ins are designed to continue the room's existing architectural trim, not ignore it.
- Do you help with layout and design ideas?
- We can work from your direction — inspiration images, a rough sketch, or an architect's drawings. We can also help you think through the layout: depth, door vs. open shelf balance, lighting placement, and how the piece will be used day-to-day. We are not interior designers, but we know how built-in cabinetry works and can ask the right questions.
- Can built-ins have integrated lighting?
- Yes. LED strip lighting inside cabinets, under shelves, and at the base is standard. We rough in the lighting location and coordinate with your electrician for the final connection.
- Do you build home office built-ins?
- Yes. Office built-ins usually combine a desk surface, upper open shelving, filing drawers, and cabinet storage. We design around your monitor setup, equipment storage, and the amount of surface you actually need.
- What makes your built-ins different from store shelving?
- Our built-ins are constructed as real furniture-grade cabinetry, not assembled from stock parts. They are built to the room's exact dimensions, match the trim, and are installed as a finished piece of the room's architecture. Store shelving is designed to be flexible — which means it never quite fits.
